Children’s lanterns lighten up Christmas

Children paraded their handmade lanterns alongside a large reindeer lantern made by local artists at the Sheffield Christmas lights switch on day.
The event was held by Sheffield City Council and Creative Arts Network from 11.30am to around 4pm on Sunday 18 November in the Winter Garden, Sheffield.
Lesley Webster, Major Events Team Sheffield City Council, said:'This is a freelance making workshop for children. Because today is Sheffield Christmas lights switch on day, this afternoon we will have a very beautiful parade from the Winter Garden, around the Peace Gardens.'

The artists from Creative Arts Network spent two weeks crafting the large reindeer lantern with paper and sticks. 'It will be left in the Winter Garden and people can enjoy it over Christmas.' Polly Perkins, a local artist in Creative Network said. This is the second year for Sheffield City Council and Creative Arts Network to hold the workshop.
Children joined the free jam jar lantern making workshop, drawing with colourful pigment on the glass bottles, which were all collected from families.
The Winter Garden was transformed into an enchanted forest with fairy grottoes, storytelling, entertainment and Christmas craft activities, including the making of jam jar lanterns.
From 3.30pm all children gathered in the Winter Garden for a Lantern procession. A group of elder actors dressed up and chorused three Christmas songs and then they helped to lighten up the candles in children’s handmade lanterns.
Children and their family paraded their handmade lanterns alongside the reindeer lantern. The short procession proceeded from the Winter Garden around the Peace Gardens Winter Wonderland.
Sheffield Christmas lights Switch On took place from 1pm Sunday in city centre. The main stage in Barker’s Pool hosted a great line-up of popular artists courtesy of Real Radio. There were fairground rides, kids’ entertainment, live music and dance, attracting visitors and families of all ages
